Diplomatic relations between Turkey and China, which were established in 1971, have improved significantly in recent years both in the political and economic field.
The visit of President H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül to China in 2009 and the visit of Chinese Premier H.E. Mr. Wen Jiabao to Turkey in 2010 have given high-level bilateral exchanges a considerable momentum. With the adoption of the "Joint Declaration on the Establishment and Development of the Strategic Relationship of Cooperation" during Premier H.E. Mr. Wen's visit, Turkey-China relations have taken on a new dimension.
Our economic and trade relations have developed in tandem with the political process. Bilateral trade, which surpassed 1 billion USD in 2000, has constantly expanded and has reached 20 billion USD today. China has thereby become Turkey's third largest trading partner. Our exports to China predominantly consist of raw materials and chemicals, which the Chinese economy is in need of. Investment goods and intermediate goods make up an important part (76 %) of our imports from China. Our investment cooperation is improving as well. China's contribution to various infrastructure projects in Turkey is increasing day by day. Moreover, our companies undertake joint projects in third countries.
In accordance with our deep rooted and rich common history, our cultural relations diversify as well. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, 2011 is being celebrated both in Turkey and China.
